In Accident and emergency departments, ankle sprain injuries are usually treated as if they are all the same thing. However there are many different injuries that you can sustain. Careful assessment and investigation with x-rays and sometimes other tests such as CT or MRI scans is essential.
An accurate diagnosis is important to determine treatment. A lot of injuries will be treated with early mobilisation, ankle supporting braces and rehabilitation with physiotherapy. However some injuries require surgery which might be necessary rapidly or in other circumstances after a period of other treatments.
Examples of injuries you might sustain include:
– Lateral ligament tears
– Syndesmosis or “High ankle” strains
– Osteochondral injuries
– Peroneal tendon tears
– Achilles tendon rupture
– Lisfranc injuries
– Injury to the many other ligaments of the ankle and foot
There are many other possible injuries that you might have sustained. Our specialists can diagnose and treat all these conditions.
